Dr. Geoffrey Reed is Senior Project Officer for the Revision of ICD-10 Mental and Behavioural Disorders Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse at the World Health Organization. In this role, he manages activities related to the development of the chapters on Mental and Behavioural Disorders for the Eleventh Revision of the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11).

Dr. Reed is also a founder of the Centre for Global Mental Health Research, a collaboration between the Faculty of Psychology at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the National Institute of Psychiatry “Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz”, Mexico, and the World Health Organization. The Centre works to develop scientific and clinical competencies to improve the identification and treatment of people in need of mental health services in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in Latin America, through the development of research and teaching initiatives with a special focus on interventions across the life span, and psychotic, affective, anxiety and substance use disorders.

Elena Medina-Mora is Director-General of the National Institute on Psychiatry in Mexico, a WHO Collaboration Centre since 1976. Dr. Medina-Mora is also Professor at the National University of Mexico, Provost Distinguished International Scholar at Penn State University, and an adjunct professor at the Harvard TS Chan School of Public Health. She served at the UN International Narcotics Control Board for the periods 2000–2005 and 2005–2007.

Dr. Medina-Mora has been a member of the World Health Organization Expert Committee on Addictions since 1986. She is a member of the WHO International Advisory Group for the Revision of ICD-10 Mental and Behavioural Disorders, and Chair of the Field Studies Coordination Group. She is also a member of the International Consortium of Psychiatric Epidemiology.

Dr. Oye Gureje is Professor of Psychiatry and the Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health, Neuroscience, and Drug and Alcohol Abuse at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He has been active in global mental health for over two decades, with leadership roles in several collaborative studies in epidemiology, randomized controlled trials, and health system strengthening initiatives. He plays a leading role in the mental health policy development in Nigeria as the Chair of the Federal Ministry of Health’s Mental Health Action Committee.

In 2008, he was conferred with Nigeria’s highest award for academic achievement, the Nigeria National Order of Merit, by the country’s president for his contributions to medicine. Dr. Gureje is a member of the WHO International Advisory Group for the Revision of ICD-10 Mental and Behavioural Disorders, and chairs the Workgroup on Somatic Distress and Dissociative Disorders.

Dr. Howard F. Andrews is Associate Professor of Neuroscience and Biostatistics at Columbia University Medical Center. He is the founder and Director of the Data Coordinating Center, which provides comprehensive project and data management services for the Columbia Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, the Conte Center for the Study of Depression and Suicide Prevention, the HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies, the Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health, Specialized Programs of Translational Research in Acute Stroke, and for many federally- and foundation-funded clinical trials and longitudinal studies focused on a wide range of health and mental health issues.

Dr. Andrews has developed secure web-based data capture and management systems for many multi-site research projects, including an ongoing study of the genetic basis of schizophrenia in South Africa, a clinical trial carried out in Chile and Brazil to determine the effectiveness of Critical Time Intervention for individuals with severe mental illness, and the New York Vanguard Center for the National Children’s Study.

Dr. José Luís Ayuso-Mateos is Chairman and Director of the Department of Psychiatry of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and is clinically affiliated with the Hospital Universitario de la Princesa. He is Principal Investigator of the Centro de Investigación Biológica en Red de Salud Mental, the Spanish Mental Health Research Network. Dr. Ayuso-Mateo is also President of the commission supervising research funding in the area of neurosciences and mental health on the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, the Spanish national research funding agency. Dr. Ayuso-Mateos is currently conducting studies on the epidemiology of suicidal ideation and behaviour in the general population, and on the relationship of psychotropic drugs and suicidal behaviour.

Dr. Ayuso-Mateos has designed several programmes aimed at the prevention of suicide in several populations in Spain. He is the director of the WHO Collaborative Centre for Mental Health Services Research and Training at the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid; he is a member of the WHO International Advisory Group for the Revision of ICD-10 Mental and Behavioural Disorders, and he is a member of the ICD-10 Working Group on Mood and Anxiety Disorders.

Dr. Michael B. First is a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University and a Research Psychiatrist in the Division of Clinical Phenomenology at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. One of the world’s leading experts in nosology, diagnosis and classification, Dr. First is a consultant on the World Health Organization’s ICD-11 revision project, the Editorial and Coding Consultant for DSM5, and an external consultant to the National Institute of Mental Health’s Research Domain Criteria project.

Dr. First was the Editor of the DSMIV-TR, the Editor of Text and Criteria for DSM-IV, and the lead author of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM, the most widely used structured diagnostic interview for making diagnoses in both research and clinical settings. He has co-authored and co-edited a number of books, including “A Research Agenda for DSM-V”, the “DSM5 Handbook for Differential Diagnosis” and the forthcoming “Learning DSM5 by Case Example”.

Dr. Wolfgang Gaebel is Professor of Psychiatry, Director of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at Heinrich-Heine University, Duesseldorf, and Head of the LVR-Klinikum Düsseldorf. He is currently serving a two-year term as President of the European Psychiatric Association, where since 2009 he has been a board member, co-chair of the Section on Schizophrenia, and coordinator of the EPA Guidance Project. Dr. Gaebel is also Director of the LVR-Institute for Mental Healthcare Research (LVR-IVF) and the WHO Collaborating Centre on Quality Management and Empowerment in Mental Health.

Dr. Gaebel is currently Chairman of the World Psychiatric Association Sections on Schizophrenia and on Quality Assurance. His research foci include clinical, pharmacological and neurophysiological aspects of schizophrenia, treatment guidelines and quality management, stigma and discrimination, and the revision of classification towards ICD-11 and DSM5. Dr. Gaebel is a member of the WHO International Advisory Group for the Revision of ICD-10 Mental and Behavioural Disorders.

Dr. Jared W. Keeley is the principle investigator for the Case-Controlled Internet-Based field studies for the ICD-11. He is Associate Professor in the Psychology department at Mississippi State University in the USA. He earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Auburn University in 2009. His experience centers around research methodology and analysis. His primary interest involves the classification of psychopathology, especially concerning mental health professionals’ use of the diagnostic system.

He has studied cognitive processes involved in clinicians’ work, including diagnosis, case conceptualization, and treatment planning.

An additional area of interest includes education and evidence-based pedagogy. He has been involved in continuing education for professional practice, both through offering trainings and through overseeing training through regional organizations.

Dr. Brigitte Khoury is Associate Professor and clinical psychologist at the Psychiatry Department at the Faculty of Medicine, American University of Beirut. She is Director of the Clinical Psychology Training Program as well as Director of the Arab Regional Center for Research and Training in Mental Health. Dr. Khoury is a consultant for several NGOs and UN bodies such as UNFPA, UNHCR, and International Medical Corps and Medecins sans Frontieres, and has worked extensively with Syrian refugees in the past three years by training health workers to provide mental health support to refugees.

Dr. Khoury is the founding president of the Lebanese Psychological Association and a current board member. She is also a founding board member of the Arab Union for Psychological Science and the current Vice President. Dr. Khoury is a member of the WHO International Advisory Group for the Revision of ICD-10 Mental and Behavioural Disorders and is the regional coordinator for the field studies in the Arab region.

Dr. Cary Kogan is Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology and Director of the Centre for Psychological Services and Research at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Kogan conducts translational neuroscience research with a special interest in neurodevelopmental disorders.

While on sabbatical at the World Health Organization, Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse, he contributed to the revision process for the Mental and Behavioural Disorders chapter of the International Classification of Diseases, including the reformulation of guidelines for Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders, Mood Disorders, and Anxiety and Fear-Related Disorders. He continues to contribute to the ICD revision process.

Dr. Valery Krasnov is Professor of Psychiatry, Director of the Moscow Research Institute of Psychiatry, and Head of the Postgraduate Department for Psychiatry at the Russian National Research Medical University. He has substantial experience in clinical psychopathology, especially on affective spectrum disorders. Dr. Krasnov is one of the initiators of the development of ecological psychiatry – mental health in the environmental context.

Dr. Krasnov has been actively involved in the organization and management of a psychiatric care system on a national level, law enforcement in psychiatry, and psychiatric aid for victims of emergency situations. He has participated in the World Psychiatric Association and World Health Organization activities as local coordinator of several global and East European projects.

Dr. Krasnov was formerly President of the Russian Society of Psychiatrists and is an Honorary Member of the World Psychiatric Association. He has contributed to the ICD-10 revision, and is currently coordinating the ICD-11 clinical field studies in Russia.

Dr. Maya Kulygina is a leading researcher in the Moscow Research Institute of Psychiatry, Department of informatics and system research in psychiatry. As a clinical psychologist, she was engaged in the modernization of the mental health care system on a primary level, and she is one of the organizers of the University Medical and Psychological Service in the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. Dr. Kulygina is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Clinical Psychology.

She is a member of the Russian Society of Psychiatrists and of the Association of Child Psychologists and Psychiatrists of Russia. In 2011, she was awarded as an Honorary Member of World Psychiatric Association due to her international collaboration activity.

Since 2010, Dr. Kulygina has been actively involved in the process of ICD-11 development, and is preparing for the WHO-coordinated field studies in Russia.

Dr. Anne M. Lovell is a medical anthropologist and Senior Research Scientist Emeritus at the National Institute for Health and Medical Research in Paris, France. She directs the mental health component of the European Research Council-funded project GLOBHEALTH at the Research Center for Medicine, Science, Health, Mental Health and Society (CERMES3), a joint centre of INSERM, the University of Paris-René Descartes, the French National Center for Scientific Research, and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales.

For over twenty years, Dr. Lovell’s research has focused on mental health service users with severe mental disorders and on the intersection of mental disorders with social and economic marginality. She serves as International Editor for Medical Anthropology Quarterly and on the editorial board of Culture, Medicine and Psychiatry. Dr. Lovell is a member of the WHO International Advisory Group for the Revision of ICD-10 Mental and Behavioural Disorders.

Dr. Jair de Jesus Mari is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Escola Paulista Medical School of the Federal University of São Paulo. He earned his Ph.D. in the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College, London, and spent one year at the Clinical Epidemiology Department of McMaster University as part of the International Clinical Epidemiology Network. He is a lead researcher in the National Research Brazilian Council with studies in the areas of Psychiatric Epidemiology, Systematic Reviews, Schizophrenia, Health Services Evaluation, Violence, and Prevention of Psychiatric Disorders.

He was one of the editors of the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry (RBP Psychiatry) from 1998–2008, and has participated in two World Psychiatry task forces – Dissemination and Health Services. He is an Honorary Visiting Professor in the Health Services and Population Research Department, Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College, London, and is currently the coordinator of the field studies of ICD-11 in Brazil.

Dr. Toshimasa Maruta is a Professor in the Health Management Center of Seitoku University. He is also Vice Chair of the ICD-11 committee of the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology and the representative of the Japanese Government for the International Advisory Group for the Revision of ICD-10 Mental and Behavioural Disorders.

He has served on the boards of many national and regional organizations. His main interest in the research field is classification and diagnostic criteria for mental disorders, and he has authored many papers, monographs, books and chapters in this area.

Dr. Chihiro Matsumoto is the National Study Coordinator for the ICD-11 Field Studies at the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology (JSPN), and in this role she organizes nationwide field studies. She has been acting as the liaison between the World Health Organization and JSPN, and has helped coordinate activities related to the development of the classification of Mental and Behavioural disorders in the Eleventh Revision of the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems in Japan.

She is a clinical psychologist with extensive experience in linguistic validation projects, which has been put to good use in translation of the clinical descriptions and diagnostic guidelines, among other material needed to conduct field studies.

Dr. Kathleen M. Pike is Professor of Psychology in the departments of Psychiatry and Epidemiology at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC). She serves as Executive Director and Scientific Co-Director of the Global Mental Health Program and is Associate Director of the Health and Aging Policy Fellows Program.

She is also Senior Supervising Psychologist in the Center for Eating Disorders at CUMC. Dr. Pike developed an internationally disseminated relapse prevention treatment program of cognitive behavioural therapy for anorexia nervosa, and she conducts clinical training and education globally focused on expanding clinical and research capacity for evidence-based treatment in low-resourced communities.

Dr. Pike is the founding chair of the US-TELL Foundation and served as vice-­chair of the board of directors for TELL in Japan, the only mental health centre dedicated to serving the needs of the international community in Tokyo.

Dr. Tahilia Rebello has been actively contributing to the development of WHO’s International Classification of Diseases, Eleventh Revision (ICD-11) as Project Coordinator for the Global Clinical Practice Network since 2013. In this capacity, Dr. Rebello collaborates with the ICD-11 core leadership group to facilitate the design, implementation, and management of global ICD-11 field studies.

Dr. Rebello is trained and certified in the use of Qualtrics software, which provides a sophisticated and secure platform for the implementation of global research studies and trainings. She looks forward to applying this skill set to the development of the GCPN.

Dr. Rebello also serves as Program Manager/Research Scientist for the Columbia Global Mental Health Program (GMHP). At the GMHP, she works on various research, education, and advocacy initiatives aimed at enhancing mental health worldwide. Dr. Rebello is trained as a neuroscientist, and completed her doctorate in the field of Developmental Psychobiology and Pharmacology at Columbia University. Her research focused on understanding the way in which early-life events, specifically those that impact the serotonin neurotransmitter system in the brain, affect the development of brain circuits implicated in anxiety and depression.

Dr. Michael C. Roberts is Professor of Clinical Child Psychology and Dean of Graduate Studies at the University of Kansas (KU). He received his doctorate from Purdue University and completed his clinical internship at Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center, Children’s Memorial Hospital. He started the KU Clinical Child Psychology Program with faculty colleagues and staff.

His scholarship involves the application of psychology to children’s physical and mental health including treatment adherence issues, program evaluation and service delivery, professional psychology issues, education and training, specialty competencies, ethics and advocacy. As a member of the Field Studies Coordination Group, Dr. Roberts conducts research for the architecture, organization and content of the ICD classification system.

Dr. Robles is a Researcher in Medical Sciences at the National Institute of Psychiatry “Ramon de la Fuente” and Professor in the graduate programs of Medical Sciences and Psychology, Faculties of Medicine and Psychology, National Autonomous University of Mexico. She is a psychologist who earned her Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in cognitive behavioural therapy, her Doctorate in Health Psychology, and completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Public Mental Health.

Dr. Robles is a leader in numerous research activities related to the development of ICD-11 in Spanish-speaking countries. She is coordinating the Ecological Implementation field studies in Mexico, and also has led Mexican field studies to evaluate the proposed modifications for the classification of conditions related to sexual health as well as the ICD-11 classification of mental disorders for primary care.

Dr. Pratap Sharan is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. Formerly he was a Medical Officer at the World Health Organization. He has served as the President of the Indian Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health and as the Editor of the Association’s journal. He serves on the Editorial Boards of various national and international journals.

He has conducted research on mental health research in low- and middle-income countries, classification of mental disorders, and identification of depression in primary health care in collaboration with World Health Organization, Geneva; Global Forum for Health Research, Geneva; World Health Organization – South East Asia Regional Office, New Delhi, and has authored many papers, monographs, books and chapters. Dr. Sharan is a member of the WHO International Advisory Group for the revision of the ICD-10 Mental and Behavioural Disorders.

Dr. Min Zhao is Professor of Psychiatry and Vice President of the Shanghai Mental Health Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. She is currently Vice Director of the Chinese Association on Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment and was Director of Shanghai Drug Abuse Treatment Center at the Shanghai Mental Health Center from 2003–2008. As a researcher, lecturer/mentor, and psychiatrist, she has been working in clinical, teaching and research in the field of drug abuse since 1994.

Dr. Zhao has worked as PI for more than ten national and international research projects, and she was the focal point in China in the UNODC Treatment project. Her research is focused on basic and clinical research on drug abuse. She introduced evidence-based pharmacotherapy and psychosocial interventions for substance use disorders in China. Dr. Zhao is currently the coordinator of the field studies of the ICD-11 in China.
